The following is a list of some of the products that we have used, recipes or links to recipes for DIY products, and other information on products considered less toxic or “safe” for you and your environment. Please always verify ingredients as manufacturers do change their products on occasion. If you find something on this list that has changed its ingredients and is no longer appropriate to be listed here, please leave me a comment or contact me. Also, this is not an all-inclusive list. There are many great products that may not be listed here. And as always, every individual is different and may react to products that others can tolerate. I hope that you find this list helpful as you clean up your environment! (All products that could be verified with the Environmental Working Group I have verified to be a rating of “2” or below. Most products listed here rate a “0” or “1” on their rating scale. “0” is considered the safest product in terms of carcinogenic and toxic ingredients, a “10” would be the highest.)
Another note: Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride (the creator of the GAPS Nutritional Program) does not recommend any soaps or products such as shampoo to be used on the skin, as this washes away the skin’s natural flora. Coconut or another GAPS approved oil (like tallow or olive oil) may be used to moisturize the skin as needed.
Shampoo and Conditioner
Carina Organics – Carina Organics has a great line of products including shampoo and conditioner. They receive some of the best ratings for personal care products by the Environmental Working Group.
DIY Deep Hair Conditioner – A deep hair treatment using essential oils.
Dr. Bronner’s Castile Liquid Soaps – We like the unscented baby mild version.
Homemade Shampoo – A wonderful DIY shampoo recipe using essential oils. I’ve also included blends for a dandruff shampoo, for fragile hair, and shampoo for hair loss.
Soap
DIY Foaming Handsoap (using essential oils)
Dr. Bronner’s Castile liquid soaps – As their website explains, this soap is great for many different uses: I use it to make everything from shampoo for my kids to dish soap to a spray to prevent blight on plants.
Wildhaven Soap Co. – This is a local business based out of Beloit, WI. They sell their soap at the Beloit Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and also a few local businesses. This is a great product! (Note: Not all of the ingredients used are organic)

Earthpaste – This natural clay toothpaste contains a warning about lead that may be confusing. Click here to see the explanation behind the label.
Thieves AromaBright Toothpaste (by Young Living) – Adds the benefits of essential oils into your toothpaste! (Note: does contain glycerin)
A simple way to brush your teeth – one simple way you can brush your teeth is by dipping your toothbrush in olive oil or coconut oil, and then dipping it in baking soda and brushing. Cost effective and easy.
** Whatever toothpaste you use, please make sure it does not contain fluoride and/or glycerin. Fluoride is a known potent neurotoxin and glycerin coats your teeth, possibly preventing them from remineralizing because it may block the flow of calcium and phosphate into the teeth. **
Deodorant

Carina Organics Unscented Body Deodorant – This is a great spray-on deodorant that contains only 3 ingredients.
An easy way to make “deodorant” is to apply a drop of lemon and a drop of lavender to your armpits in the morning. You will also find that as you eat a cleaner diet, you will have less and less body odor and your need for deodorant will decrease greatly.

Bug Repellant
Essential Oils – For a quick and easy bug spray, put 10-20 drops of Purification in a small glass spray bottle, add water to fill the bottle, and shake before applying. Peppermint is another great oil that repels spiders and ants; place Peppermint in a glass spray bottle, fill with water, and spray around the outside of your house to deter bugs from entering. Much safer than spraying pesticides and insecticides!
